Friday Newsletter: January 20, 2012.

Friday NewsLetter logo (i)It is another Friday so it must be time for another Friday Newsletter from me.

This week I have Daleks (those bad guys from Dr Who), treadmills and big hats to tell you about and lots of other random stuff too.

So let’s take a look at some of the things which have caught my eye over the past week.

Sorry Cameron Diaz but I have had to ban you from my blog.

Cameron Diaz

It really is a sad day for any blogger when the time comes to have to ban Cameron Diaz from your blog.

But rules are rules and if you send me annoying spam comments then you will get banned…even if you are a famous Hollywood actress.

Ok well more to the point you will get banned if you just pretend to have the same name as a famous Hollywood actress and then have nothing useful to say.

Now we all need our egos to be stroked from time to time.

Some marketers have particularly big egos and need to hire out the industrial sized ego stroking machine on a regular basis just to complete the task.

But really does anyone believe this comment I received from someone claiming to be Cameron Diaz?:

“I’m impressed, I must say.

Really rarely can i encounter a blog that’s the two educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail over the head.

“Your idea is actually outstanding; the issue is a factor that not enough people are generally speaking intelligently about.

“I am very happy that stumbled across this around my search for something relating to this.”

Well actually on closer inspection the author claims to be called Diaz Cameron but they clearly were unable to find that name on the email account they created and had to settle for Diaz Camiron instead.

Now if the real Cameron Diaz wants to comment on my blog then you will be very welcome…just lay off the false praise ok?

Ah so this is what happened to the Daleks then.

If you are a fan of the cult BBC TV sci-fi series Dr Who then you will certainly have heard of the Daleks.

They were one of the Doctor’s oldest and deadliest enemies and have been a hit with viewers of the show since its beginning.

Daleks were a race of half-alien, half-machine creatures from the planet Skaro whose catchphrase (if evil aliens have catchphrases that is) “exterminate” summed up their desire to kill any non Daleks around them in every episode they were in.

They looked like this:

Now I thought they had all been killed off by the Doctor and were no more but then I see this image from NASA.

Modern day Daleks?

Jet engines or modern day Daleks?

These modern ‘Daleks’ are actually the main engines from now-retired Space Shuttles, which are being refurbished for a new career as part of Nasa’s upcoming heavy lift rocket, the Space Launch system, or SLS.

Medics Drop Transplant Heart in Mexico City.

Journalists around the world could not help but talk about a “heart-stopping moment” when medics in Mexico dropped a human heart which was being rushed to a hospital operating theater where a patient was waiting for the transplant organ.

The organ was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, private jet and police helicopter all without incident.

But as paramedics wheeled the cool-box containing the organ on the final few hundred yards to the hospital entrance, one of them tripped over the box, which burst open, sending the organ tumbling onto the pavement.

The medic scooped it up, put it back into the box, but thanks to multiple layers of protective cladding it was undamaged and the transplant went ahead as planned.

Here is a video of the event from Mexican TV. The report is in Spanish but the footage is dramatic.

Update: The video has been removed from YouTube.

Whatever Happened to ‘Women and Children First?’

I always thought that it was a rule written in stone that the captain was always the last off a sinking ship.

Captain Edward Smith went down with the Titanic but in this modern-day and age it is altogether too sexist to say “women and children first” or has it simply become, in the case of a disaster, ‘everyone for themselves.”

Fast forward 100 years and when the cruise ship Concordia runs aground and sinks off the Italian coast, its captain Francesco Schettino is accused of being one of the first to abandon ship.

Costa Concordia

Costa Concordia...captain is accused of abandoning the ship while passengers and crew members were still on board

He now faces charges of manslaughter amid claims that he abandoned his post and refused orders from the coastguard to return to the vessel and direct the evacuation efforts.

According to transcripts of the call which were released earlier this week the captain is heard saying he cannot return to the ship because ‘it is dark and he can’t see a thing.”

Even more pathetically he is heard asking how many people had been killed to which the coastguard replied: “I don’t know. You should be the one telling me that!”

It has even been alleged by one of the ship’s chefs that the captain ordered him to prepare dinner for him and a female companion which they ate in the restaurant as the doomed cruise liner sank.

Maybe the captain has an explanation for his actions and maybe the nickname “Captain Coward” that he has now picked up will turn out to be rather unfair when he gets to tell his side of the story.

However somehow I doubt that he will end up coming out of this one covered in glory. It really is not looking too good for the captain.

His career is almost certainly over and he is looking at the very real possibility of up to 12 years behind bars if convicted of the charges against him.

At least he has escaped with his life which is more than can be said for a number of his passengers and crew into whose care they had entrusted their lives.

Extra Credit From Six Battery-Powered Nerds

It is great to see that the TimTech nerd surf stable of traffic exchanges is back up to its full complement of six TEs.

In case you missed the news, you can now nerd surf on the four TimTech traffic exchanges (ILH, SX, Sweeva and ThumbVu) plus two new ones – Randy Ritter’s Top Flight Traffic and William Miller’s Surf Skeleton.

Even better news is that you now get tokens for being active in TimTech sites and you can use these tokens to buy batteries which can be used to gain increased surf bonuses at any of the six nerd surf sites.

And finally…

If you want to make an immediate impression in an online conference room without even uttering a single word…then consider wearing a huge red hat.

Don’t have a big red hat to wear?

No problem…you could always just turn on your webcam and start jogging for 21 minutes instead.

LOL, Oh Patrick! I just LOVE Fridays! Not just cuz it is the start of the weekend, but I wait in anticipation of what Patrick is going to come up with next! I do remember the original Dr. Who and used to watch it as a child. They now have a modernized version but they keep changing the actor for the doctor, it makes my head spin! My husband enjoys it though and watches it weekly.

Gotta love your pun about the “heart stopping moment” So glad everything turned out okay.

As for the cruise ship, that truly is a sad state of affairs. :(

Oh, and if I see Cameron Diaz out in cyberworld, I’ll send her your way!
    :-p enjoy your weekend!

    What an eventful week.
I just have to comment about Karen Kuty and her BIG RED HAT –
feeling under the weather, Karen wanted to participate in a recent
TE Live discussion. I love the fact she didn’t hide under the covers
but instead put on the BIG Hat and jumped right on camera.
Now that is dedication to your online business with a sense of humor.
I’m a HUGE fan of Karen…. wtg kiddo!

    Hi Patrick,

I hadn’t expected to see myself online in my big red hat! Now I’m wishing I had thrown on a black sweater, too.

    I just hate it when I’m not color-coordinated. :-)

All kidding aside, the discussion in the webinar at the time was about the benefit of participating on camera in webinars.

I was not planning on going on-camera, since I was ill and having a bad hair day (Bride of Frankenstein would have been jealous!). However, I quickly realized that was just an excuse to stay in my comfort zone. So, I broke out my fabulous big red hat.

My point is that there is NO excuse not to go on-camera. If you’re having a bad hair day, wear a hat! Or point the camera somewhere else and just talk.

Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from pursuing your goals and building your business.

Thank you, Cathy, for getting the fact that it was not about the hat.

Thank you, Patrick for the unexpected laugh.

    Best Regards,

    Karen Kuty (klkuty)

Costa Concordia was impressive and beautiful ship, but however the collision with it was important for the whole cruise shipping. In any case we should get our answers for the disaster with the vessel and the officers to be more careful with maneuvering and navigation.
