Monday Moaning: How Far Would You Go To Make A Profit?

by Patrick Griffin on January 9, 2012 · 7 comments

Monday Moaning logoPerhaps it may be a little unusual for an internet marketing blog, but today I am going to talk about breast implants.

Here in Europe there is something of a health scare at the moment over the safety of one type of implant which is said to have used sub-standard silicone.

Amazingly it is claimed that the PIP implants at the center of the scare not only dispensed with a protective shell which would help prevent leakages but also used an untested gel which, it is said, was actually intended for use in mattresses.

When I heard this news it was one of the few times in life that I thought I must have misheard the report.

Surely no manufacturer of any medical product which would be placed inside a human body would use materials designed to be filling material for mattresses?

This just beggars belief.

In France, women who have had undergone cosmetic surgery and had the PIP implants fitted are being advised to have them removed. Hundreds of thousands of women could be affected worldwide.

It is unclear just how dangerous these implants are or even whether there is any real risk to health at all.

One of the problems is that because the gel was not designed for human implant use, it did not undergo the stringent clinical tests required to ensure its safety.

Imagine for a moment that you were not in business online and were involved in the manufacture of cosmetic breast implants.

Would you use cheaper materials designed for use in household furniture if it meant cutting manufacturing costs or increasing profit margins?

Personally I can’t imagine how anyone could even contemplate such a thing. Can you?

Stories like this are truly frightening.

Hi Patrick,
Although it may be a strange subject for you to write about, the facts are frighteningly Real, especially for women. Breast implants are a very common occurence here in the US, and every now and then, there will be some type of scare for the women that have had a particular brand. I can’t imagine that a supposedly competent medical company would sacrifice women’s health just to make an extra buck! But, in the real world, it happens much more than we probably know!
Thanks for putting some light on this subject, Patrick!

Good Monday Morning, Patrick! OMG! R U SERIOUS? Well, of course you are or you wouldn’t have posted it! Yes, it truly is scary and NO to answer your question, I would never do that, especially if it meant putting someone else’s health and LIFE at risk! It amazes me what levels some people will go to to make a profit. Yes, we all want to make money, but not at the expense of someone else!

Reminds me when I was in my late teens. My father was the Quality Assurance Manager for a food manufacturing company and I was a temp there working in the summer between college semesters. There was a pallet of peanut butter that had gotten air in it. Although it would not have been dangerous if people had bought it and ingested it, from a consumer standpoint, it didn’t look appealing and If I saw it in a store, I wouldn’t have purchased it. The Production Supervisor, wanted us to inspect the jars and pass as many as we could, he was looking at it from a manufacturing stand point and didn’t want to lose money, I was looking at it from a consumer standpoint that I wouldn’t purchase it, so they would have lost more money anyway by not selling it. The Production Supervisor was going to pass some through, I called my dad, not to tattle, but because, I couldn’t in good conscience (sp) let it go through. My dad took one look at it and said, “Thank you so much for calling and you are right, this peanut butter cannot leave the factory”

Yes it is truly scary to see what lengths some people will go to in order to make a quick profit.
And, yes, you did right to point out the sub-standard peanut butter back then.

It’s a bit like the people who work on the production line of the chicken nugget factory are all vegetarians.

I also know that despite all the stringent UK and FDA regualtions around healthcare that if you go to a different country and have cash that you can and will get anything done that you want.

If you thought that some marketers in the IM world were scumbags then back street sellers of fake medication are happy to profit from selling something that could potentially kill you, rather than ruin your finances.

Oh, and the adsense adverts for this post are telling me I need liposuction, but they must know I’m classy as it’s a Harley Street clinic.

Hi Andrew,
I guess the long and the short of it is that no matter what industry you are working in there will be people who cut corners and they will not worry about the consequences to third parties.
Yes it is bad being ripped off by some scumbag marketer but you are right that is much worse having your health ruined or your life cut short by using dodgy products.
P.

P.S. I am sure Adsense know you are classy – and if they did not previously then they do now. ;)
