I like to make it as easy as possible for people to comment on my blogs.
I don’t see why people should have to jump through hoops in order to get their comments published.
That is why my position is that your comments get published by default. If you have something to say then I don’t put any barriers in your way.
I use an anti-spam plugin to prevent people taking advantage of this policy and it generally works.
I am happy to delete the couple that get in under the wire and occasionally I will leave the comment but remove the URL they want to highlight.
However recently on my ILoveCTP blog, things have been getting a bit out of hand.
The other day there were 20 spam comments waiting for me when I switched on my computer and this has been happening a bit too often for my liking.
Here is just a small selection of them:

The funny thing was that each is from a different name and a different IP address but all the comments were virtually the same:
“I simply want to say I am just beginner to blogging and seriously savored you’re website. Almost certainly I’m likely to bookmark your blog post . You amazingly have beneficial articles. Bless you for revealing your web site.”
And all were promoting the same website.
So thanks to Issac, Latisha, Gregory, Felisa, Keeley, Georgette, Andrew, Carroll, Evangeline, Andrew (twice) and Burton.
From now on whenever someone new comments on the CTP blog I will have to approve the initial comment.
Once again it is the selfish, the lazy and ignorant who make life more difficult than it ought to be for the honest people out there.
Hi Patrick,
I know exactly what you mean. I get a lot of spam comments myself.
I use a mix of GASP plugin from comment luv and also akismet. Although I have akismet switched off at the moment due to it moving comments to spam, when they are not actually spam.
I try not to let it bother me lol
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
I also use GASP and it catches most of the Spam.
I also try not to let it bother me too much…but it does make for useful blog posts from time to time.

Hi Patrick.
I think it’s great you are allowing comments on your blog. I am pretty new to doing blogs, so I’m not up with the new plugins that help with spam. I feel like a total newbie in the blog area of business.
I tried allowing instant comments “once” but ended up with hundreds of posts a day later that I’m assuming were coming from some type of backlink bot.
I feel your pain! It’s REALLY frustrating! LOL
And, as a side note, I am loving your and Justin’s “Beyond the Quotes” book. It’s very inspirational!

Hi Paula,
If you are blogging then you really will need some anti-spam software or plugins or you will be inundated with hundreds if not thousands of spam comments.
Thanks for your kind words about the book…I am so glad you like it and find it useful.

You don’t see comments from me regularly because I speak when have something relevant. Part of the problem comes from so called “gurus” teaching about driving traffic every possible way. Bots, backlink software and so on. Anyway you look at it that is spamming period!
Am not a fan of Google but applaud them FINALLY putting the slap on links having relevancy. When you hook up and your niche has nothing to do with it, does anyone realize you are bringing down the integrity of THAT person’s hard work just so you can rank.
If I come across a blog, especially a stranger, and see comment spam it leaves a bad impression despite how good the content. I’m far from being any expert but common on, use common sense.
Thank you Patrick bringing this to light…..has always annoyed me

Hi Elzbieta,
I think you have hit the nail on the head with your comment about the “gurus” who do tell people to drive traffic via any means possible.
It is very sneaky and also very annoying.

This is kind of funny. Because the”strategy” they’re using (building back links by log posting) is deader than the dodo.
Blogging works as a social tool, idiots are idiots no matter what social tool they use.

As a regular reader of this blog, this acts as a reminder, we are not alone.
The good part of CTP is it’s full of like minded people. Most people come to CTP to learn how to share the internet in a fun and constructive way.
We have to live with this get rich quick culture.
Let them get an education.

Hi Keith,
We do indeed have to live with the get rich culture…I don’t think they are ever going to go away.

Hey Patrick,
I think some of your comments may be from bots (short for “robots”) or even worse, outsourced people to build backlinks manually.
I normally use the combination of Akismet + CommentLuv and I always have to approve the first comment in order to get a comment published.
If I see somebody makes a great comment and then starts spamming, I just delete the comments and blacklist the IP as I have a zero tolerance for spammers on my blog.
Funny though, I only get about one or two spam comments daily (sometimes zero) so I guess this works for me.

Hi Sergio,
It is funny but all of these spam comments have come to the CTP blog for some reason.
They stand out all the more there because that blog does not attract that many genuine comments.
Now I do what you do and ensure that the first comment needs to be approved.
I also have no problems with blacklisting the IP address of spammers.
Talk soon.

Askimet does a great job in stopping everything, but I do have it set up to put the first comment to “pending” then all the others get approved automatically. Only 53 comments in the queue at the moment, and a good way to know they are fakes is to look for the lack of a gravatar, and long affiliate links to things like cheap insurance, dodgy perfumes, and the like.
I think a lot of the trouble comes some bots who think they can get backlinks, and the people who are daft enough to buy products that can automate the traffic. The sooner that this area of the market becomes self regulated and more mature the better.
This a subject worthy of the Monday Moan.

I had to stop a blog because of things like this because after a very short time once the appeared, there came more and more “blog post’ from advertiser or marketers using bots to post on my blog.
What ever happened to “Netiquette”……the ethics of DBA (doing business as) – whatever ?

Hi Bob,
It is sad that you had to shut down a blog because of spammers.
And you are right in that ethics is missing in many people.
