I love social media – especially Twitter. Immediate small bites of information appeal to me.
I severely cut down the amount of time I spent on Facebook because I was annoyed by all the inane nonsense posted by so many people who use it.
Now I use it more after realizing how easy it is to ‘unsubscribe” from the updates of those who follow you. This way I only get updates from those people I really want to hear from.
You may think that sounds a bit harsh of me but life is far too short to read every single update from every person every day.
So it was interesting when an item on Facebook from Sean R Nicholson (also known as SocMedSean) caught my eye recently.
Sean said he was irritated by those who “just post quotes all day long, thinking they are being inspirational” and then asked others what annoyed them.
This made me smile because I also find those endless inspirational quotes to be rather uninspiring to say the least.
But back to Sean’s question on Facebook.
So he and I are annoyed by the same thing but what gets others annoyed?
Here are a selection of the replies that Sean received:
- People who simply retweet everything from others.
- When folks forget that being social includes being nice
- Spamming, no.1 on the list.
- Endless pictures of coffees, lunches, dinners, saturated sunsets and fluffy pets by people trying to get their Empire Avenue scores up.
- People telling me ”you must do this’ to be successful using social media as if there is only one way.
- People who tag me in photos or cartoons on my own timeline that have ZERO to do with me
Maybe your pet hate has been covered in this list or maybe you have something else which annoys you about your social media neighbors. Feel free to share.
Finally thanks to Sean for allowing me to use his original Facebook post as the basis for today’s post.
Check him out on Facebook or check out his blog or do both.

Hi Patrick
To me it has to be people who just post affiliate links all the time, and think that if you try to connect with them it must be because you want to know about product xyz.
I actually quite enjoy seeing the mundane images of everyday life that people post, if someone posts about a cake or place of interest it will make me think about doing something similar, or give me something to say as an icebreaker during coffee break at work.
Twitter is effectively the world’s water cooler, only you do have a choice about who you invite to sit next to you. If someone is just spouting rubbish all the time it’s super simple to delete and ask them not to drop by again. If only real life was that simple…

Yep that is a big turn off for me too.
I have nothing against affilate marketing – in fact i have been known to ask for affiliate links from people when I have been buying stuff…but they are not the only reason why social media exists.

Hey Patrick,
I know you remember I recently enrolled in a quick 4-week training course. It was being sold on the Warrior Forum and now we’re on the last week.
There’s a forum inside the training, a small one but highly active. Most of these people are newbies and to my disbelief almost every one of them using twitter post nothing but affiliate links.
When I first got to that forum I had to open a new thread and introduce myself and so I did.
I also threw in there my social media links but gave a small pre recommendation and it was exactly this one:
“Note: Don’t mind adding me if all your statuses are just automated messages. I find that absolutely pointless for real networking.”
I haven’t been added by many people (guess it worked?) but I have to tell you that the few ones that have, are genuinely interested in networking with me.
I have been offered a number of times to mastermind with other people, others want to participate on my projects and a few of them are actually really happy to have met me.
I’ve already made some money from affiliate sales and I never asked them for anything in return.
This shows the power behind real networking instead of just throwing dirt at a wall hoping some will stick.
For the people posting quotes all the time and building their twitter following count numbers and thinking they are doing a wonderful social media work… more power to them and good luck to getting even ONE sale from that.

Hi Sergio,
As usual I am in complete agreement with your approach and I am glad that is having such good results.
Nothing you have said is complicated but some people have such a hard time understanding that bombarding strangers with affiliate links is not the best way to do business or make new friends.

I actually got fed up of using facebook at 1 point because of the affiliate links all i,m interested in is actually networking the only link i use is my blog now and photos if i,ve travelled anywhere as if posting affiliate links all the time will get you sales good way to get you unfriended.
Anyway just thought i say my piece.

Hi Harry.
As I said in my reply to Sergio above, I totally agree with the sentiment you both express.

I think that nowadays using social media site is very useful specially for those who work online. because they can make use of this social media site for advertising their products.
… and spamming the others! Have they, the ones that work online, ever, once, just once, asked somebody if they liked to be spammed with tons of links? I don’t have anything against advertising a product, but most of the times the limits on common sense are being blown away by those advertisers. You guess it right, spam is the most annoying thing for me on Facebook.

All good points and, sadly, common sense is really not as common as it ought to be.

Another great post Patrick… between who outscored who in Farmville, and the other games… to my phone does not work so message me… to the crazy spats i have seen on Facebook. I have made it a point to only be on long enough to review key posts, birthdays and make an occasional inspirational post that means something to me. There are people that have their entire life history on Facebook. I wonder 2 things… Do they know what privacy is? Do they have a life? LOL
Thank you,
Paul

Hi Paul,
I have a similar approach to you and I am constantly amazed by the kind of personal information people freely talk about on FB.
It is a massive turn off for me.
