Listening to Shane Bost and Blain Jones talk is like listening in on two young brothers fighting over the toys in the romper room:
“Pick it up!”
“No YOU pick it up.”
“Well you put it there.”
“No I didn’t.”
“You did SO! I saw you.”
“No you didn’t.”
“I did.”
And on it goes…for hours, days o weeks at a time.
At least that’s how it appeared to me when I listened in for a while as they made some programming changes to SiteXplosion the other day.
They were adding bubbles to the site chat area and while, on the surface at least, it may have sounded as though they were squabbling with each other, it was clear that they were actually getting stuff done very efficiently indeed.
Blain only brought the site crashing down twice while he played with the code but then got it up so quickly that most surfers wouldn’t have even noticed that anything was wrong.
Now the site chat contains a picture of the person talking with a speech bubble coming from their mouth.
Different color backgrounds correspond to the membership levels of those taking part in the chat.
Like this:

Bubble chat looks good.
And here’s another good idea from the boys in the bubble…TETakeover which has been running for about three weeks now.

It works by targeting one TE at a time for a week and blasting it with ads for SiteXplosion. And when members join in the promotion they are rewarded with fifty cents for each 1,000 views from the targeted exchange.
Blain and Shane seem to be doing everything right these days.
I wouldn’t be surprised if other less creative traffic exchange owners will soon follow suit?
Great idea and a great implementation on the chat bubbles. How come I don’t have enough spare cash on hand to have both of them working for me!

Hmmm. Good question.
I think you can buy one with cash and the other with TimTech tokens.
Hope that helps.

Hi Patrick
If I ever get time to properly nerd surf I will look out for bubbles, it will be wonderful for branding as it should draw attention to the fact you’re chatting and sharing information freely.
Great idea about the TE takeover, seems to be a great way of rewarding the active members. As you say more active owners promoting in new ways can only help everyone.

I think TE Takeover is a great idea. It reminds me of the SWT Task Force at Shockwave Traffic.

Hey Patrick,
Ahhh I do remember that conversation, happened not long ago.
To be honest I was a bit shocked on how cool the bubble chats looked and even though I don’t chat much whenever I’m (nerd) surfing I do enjoy an occasional hello.
The SiteExplosion guys are doing a terrific job indeed.

Hi Sergio,
I actually just logged in that day just to find a screengrab for the blog post and I was very surprised to find you there.
I know you used to surf a lot a while ago but I know you have so many things to do right now that you were the last person I would expect to find online and chatting at a traffic exchange.
Well maybe not the last person. I think if the Pope was surfing SiteXplosion that would surprise me more.
Talking about the Pope. He is in Mexico now right? I have just seen a picture online of him wearing a sombrero.
I have nothing against your traditional headgear but I think it looks a little odd atop the head of the Pope.

LOL the Pope surfing SiteXplosion hahaha!
Yeah he was in Mexico and he did look a bit odd wearing the sombrero lol
I think he’s on his way to Cuba right now though.
About being busy, well I am burning right now.
I wish I could update everyone on the blog about everything I’m doing but it just slows me down and that’s the last thing I want right now.
I’ll have some very interesting updates very soon.
